What Is a Full-Body Skin Exam, and When Should I Get One?

What is a full-body skin exam exactly? It’s a physical skin examination that checks for unusual marks, which could be signs of skin cancer or other diseases, and can be performed by a dermatology specialist at scheduled intervals, as well as daily by you during a self-exam

Dermatologists pay special attention to moles, and birthmarks, making sure they don’t have an unusual color, size, texture, or shape. A full-body skin exam takes around 20 minutes. Your doctor will check your ears, toes, scalp, fingers, and all other areas for signs of skin cancer including melanoma. They may request that you remove any nail polish or makeup before the exam as well.

The best time to have a full-body skin exam is immediately after you notice something unusual in your skin. Time is of the essence when it comes to treating skin cancer, as the earlier it is noticed the easier it is to treat. It is also important to have a full-body skin exam during your yearly physical.

Doctors will look for signs of skin cancer which includes:

  1. Bumps that are shiny, pink, red, white, or translucent
  2. Painful and itchy spots on the body
  3. Sores that don’t properly heal
  4. Unusual change in birthmarks and moles

Who Should Receive a Full-Body Skin Exam?

While it is a good idea for everyone to get a skin exam at least once a year, many people are at higher risk than others.

Those that should receive a skin exam more frequently are patients with:

  • Family history of skin cancer
  • Frequent exposure to the sun due to their career
  • Moles
  • Regular tanning bed use
  • Skin that easily burns or freckles
